“What should I bake for the sale?” a volunteer asked yesterday in her sign-up email. I get this question from folks all the time. The first answer I give is “Whatever you can!” In a community effort as big as Austin Bakes, every little bit helps. The truth is that everything tends to sell at Austin Bakes, and we take leftover items to local Fire Stations after the bake sale ends. Familiar items like kolaches, cookies, decorated cookies, muffins, scones, brownies, pies, breads, cake pops, and decorated cakes and cupcakes hold up well in the heat and often sell most quickly. One of our veteran bakers Lazy Smurf said it best on Facebook this week, “If it’s cute, it will sell!”
We do have some guidelines for baked goods at the sale to help keep Austin Bakes safe and to help us raise as much money as we can.
Savory and sweet baked goods, preserves, and homemade candies are welcome! There is no minimum requirement for participation, and we ask everyone to sign up so that we’re ready for next Saturday.
Items at the bake sale need to be wrapped or boxed for sale when you drop them off. Individually wrapped treats, packaged dozens and half-dozens, as well as whole cakes/pies/tarts/loaves etc. are welcome. Locally owned baking supply store Make it Sweet (formerly called All in One Bake Shop) is our favorite place to find packaging. When you shop at Make it Sweet between now and the sale, mention “Austin Bakes” and they’ll donate 25% to the cause!
It will be hot outside that day, so please make items that will be safe and appetizing to eat after some time in the sun. That means no custard, cheesecakes, ice cream cakes, whipped cream, cream cheese frosting, whipped egg white frosting or dairy items that spoil quickly.
Please label your treats with the item name. Include your @Twitter handle and blog URL if you’re online. Gluten-free/dairy-free/vegan/nut-free items are welcome and should be clearly labeled as such.
We sell everything by donation, so the more delicious/special the items, and the nicer the packaging/presentation, the more money we can get! Sign up to bake or volunteer, and let us know what you’re making to help people in West.
