Austin Bakes is excited to announce that we are partnering with Global Giving for Austin Bakes for Australia.

Our mission is to raise $20,000 for the people and wildlife of Australia at the bake sales or through online giving by February 1, 2020.

Why Global Giving?

There were so many things to consider when choosing a charity for this sale. Thousands of homes have been lost during Australia’s wildfires. Billions of animals have lost their lives. Countless animals have lost their habitats.

We chose to support Global Giving because their fund for Australia plans to support both humans and wildlife. They are also a trusted charity with a good track record and an excellent rating from Charity Navigator.

About Global Giving (excerpt from GlobalGiving.org)

GlobalGiving is the largest global crowdfunding community connecting nonprofits, donors, and companies in nearly every country. We help nonprofits from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe (and hundreds of places in between) access the tools, training, and support they need to be more effective and make our world a better place.

About the Australian Wildfires Relief Fund

by GlobalGiving’s Disaster Recovery Network

Summary

High winds and drought conditions are causing wildfires to spread rapidly through Australia, prompting mass evacuations, destroying homes and killing millions of animals. This fund will support immediate rescue and relief efforts for people and animals impacted by the fires and will eventually transition to funding long-term assistance to help residents recover and rebuild. All donations to this fund will exclusively support wildfire recovery.

Challenge

Strong winds have caused the bushfires to spread quickly, prompting mass evacuations in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. Authorities said 3.5% of the Victorian landmass had been affected by the fires. Several of GlobalGiving’s nonprofit partners are responding to survivors’ immediate needs and have asked us to help fund local relief and recovery efforts.

Solution

All donations to this fund will support relief and recovery efforts for people and animals affected by the bushfires. Initially, the fund will help first responders meet survivors’ immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. The fund will transition to support longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted organizations in region. We monitor the impact on affected communities and work with partners on the ground to allocate funds to where they’re needed most.

Long-Term Impact

We believe that organizations that are deeply rooted in local communities are in the best position to provide long-term support for survivors of natural disasters like wildfires. By funding the relief efforts of local organizations, donations to this fund have the potential to build stronger response capacity so that these organizations are better equipped to face future challenges. GlobalGiving will post reports about how funds have been used and will email these reports to donors.

How to Give

Businesses and individuals supporting Austin Bakes for Australia can give to Global Giving via cash, check and our online giving page. Each bake sale location has committed lead volunteers who will be responsible for managing individual gifts and ensuring that they are accounted for at the end of the fundraiser. We have a game plan in place to track donations, report them transparently, and to make sure every penny ends up safely in Global Giving’s hands.

Austin Bakes for Australia is a donation-based bake sale. That means instead of listing prices on each item, we’ll look to customers to decide the value of their purchase and support relief efforts accordingly. We’ll accept cash and checks made out to Global Giving at the various bake sale locations in and around Austin. Supporters who wish to make a gift by credit card may do so at the Austin Bakes for Australia Fundraiser page. We’ll be able to make change and break some large bills at the bake sale, but we are asking customers who are able to please bring exact change or a check made out to the Global Giving.

Here is detailed information about our handling procedures for gifts:

Cash: all cash collected before and during the bake sale will be combined into a money order, payable to Global Giving, after the bake sale on Saturday, February 1. We will mail the money order, along with all checks, to Global Giving the following Monday. Donors who give cash will not receive a receipt for their personal gift, but they will be able to see how much cash we raised collectively when we report the amount on here our blog and on our Austin Bakes for Australia Fundraiser page.

Checks: should be made to “Global Giving” with “Australia Wildfire Fund” written in the memo line. We will keep a log on our Austin Bakes for Australia Fundraiser page of all checks that we receive. That way, donors can be sure that we have received their gift and see how their contribution has increased our total fundraising. We will mail all checks to Global Giving on the following Monday.

Online: gifts in any amount can be made securely online at our Austin Bakes for Australia Fundraiser page using a credit or debit card. Donors can see their contribution on the Austin Bakes for Australia Fundraiser page, and their support will count towards our overall goal to raise $20,000 for Wildfire Relief efforts. If you would like a receipt of your donation, we recommend using this method to donate.
