Austin Bakes Update & Printable Flyer!

Sign up to volunteer or bake for West. AustinBakesPoster

It’s been a big day at Austin Bakes headquarters. A press release announcing our bake sale locations went out to media this afternoon, and I just sent information about the sale to our 81st volunteer! We are making good progress, but we still need baked goods, supplies, and volunteers at all eight bake sale locations.

The good news about signing up is that it’s easier than ever! If you want to help, give us your contact info on our nifty sign up page! When we receive your information, we’ll send you details about what to bake, sale logistics, and where and when to drop baked goods off at the sale. We’ll also give you information about volunteering if you’d like to help out next Saturday.

Lots of people have requested a printable flyer advertising the sale. It’s here! Please consider printing a few of these out and hanging them up around your office, church, or local business. The file should be small enough to share comfortably via email, too. Click this link to download the flyer.

The last bit of happy news for today is that our list of business sponsors is growing! The owners and employees of many of these businesses will be baking and volunteering for the sale alongside home bakers, and a growing team of food bloggers, making this a true community effort. Please join us next Saturday in support of our neighbors up north.

Special thanks to volunteers Rachelle and Catherine for sending out our press release.

Good news and a $1,000 matching gift from Key Ingredient!

Well, Austin Bakes has hit the big time! As I’m writing this, I’m preparing to go on Fox 7 News to promote the bake sale with Kate Payne, a local author who is baking for Bastrop at our South Congress location.

That’s not the only good news: Yesterday we received press in the Austin American Statesman, and the bake sale has been covered on over a dozen local blogs and media sources. We are over 100 bakers and volunteers strong for Saturday, and counting. It doesn’t get any better than that, right?

Wrong. Today it gets a lot better, thanks to Austin’s own Key Ingredient

Starting today, Key Ingredient will match the first $1,000 in contributions on our online giving page. Together, we could raise $2,000 for the Central Texas Wildfire Fund before the bake sale even begins.

If you will not be able to attend the bake sale on Saturday, would you please consider making a gift to the Central Texas Wildfire Fund online today? Your dollars will do twice as much good in Bastrop and other parts of Central Texas devastated by wildfire.

If you don’t carry cash but want to shop at the sale, please consider making a gift online today. When you show us your gift receipt at the sale on Saturday, we’ll help you shop for the baked goods of your dreams! And your purchase will be twice as nice thanks to Key Ingredient’s matching contribution.

I’m sure you get the point: we have a tremendous opportunity to start our bake sale $2,000 ahead. Please make a gift online today so that we can take advantage of every available dollar of Key Ingredient‘s matching challenge.

One last bit of good news: Key Ingredient is an Austin-based startup company that loves home cooks. Their mission is to help home bakers and food bloggers preserve and share the recipes they love on the Internet. As a thank you to the 100+ amateur cooks who are baking for Bastrop, Key Ingredient will be giving away a Demy Digital Recipe Reader to one us on Sunday, October 2nd. We will select a winner at random from our volunteer list and announce the lucky winner here on the Austin Bakes Blog. We are still in need of bakers and volunteers at all seven sale sites. If you’re interested in joining us, please send us an email  so that we can get you signed up.

That’s all the good news I can squeeze into one post. Thank you all for your continuing support of Austin Bakes for Bastrop, and for helping us meet our fundraising goal with Key Ingredient. Together, we are going to do a lot of good this weekend!

Bake Sale Preview #1

Are you getting excited about the bake sale? We sure are! There are three days until Austin Bakes for Japan, and waiting for our first cookie to sell feels like waiting for Santa to come. That is, if Santa were bringing really awesome cookies and money for AmeriCares. If you’re mapping out your schedule for Saturday, here’s a convenient Google Map with all 5 locations of the bake sale plotted out. If you’re more a pen and paper person, the locations are:

Downtown Austin: Woof Gang Bakery, 1204 North Lamar Blvd., 78703 (10 AM-2 PM)

East Austin: Nomad Bar, 1213 Corona Drive, 78723 (10 AM-2 PM)

West Austin: The Shops at Mira Vista, 2785 Bee Cave Road, 78746 (10 AM-5 PM)

Central Austin: Foreign & Domestic, 306 E. 53rd st., 78751 (10 AM-2 PM)

South Austin: Hotel San Jose, 1511 South Congress Ave., 78704 (10 AM-2 PM)

Gluten and dairy-free goodness at the West location- The Shops at Mira Vista!

Jessica from ATX Gluten-Free is bringing these coconut lemon sugar cookies to the West location of the bake sale. Buying these cookies is a gluten-free and dairy-free way to give to AmeriCares’ work in Japan! Speaking of gluten, we’ll have gluten-free and vegan goodies available while they last at all five locations of the bake sale.

Chocolate Almond Toffee

Crunchy, chocolate-covered, gluten-free goodness at the Central location!

If you live in central Austin, Tasty Type’s chocolate almond toffee (also gluten-free!) is both a convenient and delicious excuse to make a donation to AmeriCares. It will be available at our Foreign & Domestic location. If you’re looking for something a little more unusual, or if you live east, perhaps a retro fabulous gelatin mold is just the thing!

Jello Mold for Japan!

Available at the Nomad Bar while they last!

The Modern Gelatina will be on hand at The Nomad Bar starting at noon on Saturday to sell some of her one-of-a-kind, boozy gelatin molds. This niche blogger has received international acclaim for her work, so the chance to buy one of these vintage-inspired creations is not to be missed! She created this Plum Wine Cocktail recipe especially for Austin Bakes for Japan, but she’ll have other flavors on Saturday, too.

Vegan Cocoa Puff Treat

These cocoa puff treats are just one of several vegan items that will be at the south location!

Vegan Lazy Smurf will be making these vegan Peanut Butter Cocoa Puff Treats for Saturday. She’s one of  several vegan bakers at the south bake sale location, and although we’ll have vegan options at every sale, the south has the largest selection.

Chocolate Cookies

Available in the afternoon at the west location. Perfect for kids (or grown-ups) who want to support AmeriCares!

Across town, Cookie Madness is bringing Chocolate Skor Bar Cookies to the Mira Vista location around 2 PM. These treats are sure to be kid-pleasing because of the high chocolate content and rainbow sprinkles!

Brownies

Available at the Central Location- Foreign & Domestic!

Austin Bakes organizer Lisa is Cooking will be bringing these white chocolate hazelnut blondies to the central location, plus she’s our lead volunteer there!

Strawberry Almond Scones

Available downtown at Woof Gang Bakery!

The lead volunteer at our downtown location, Franish Nonspeaker, is making these Strawberry Almond Scones with Buttermilk Glaze for folks who don’t want rich dessert items too early in the morning.

For those of you who DO want a rich dessert item early in the morning, Miles of Chocolate famous chocolatey desserts will be available at the downtown and central locations. They are even cutting the bars into single servings and wrapping them individually for us! These treats are a must-try if you’re at the bake sale. For three years running, Miles of Chocolate has been voted #1 in the Local Chocolate category in the Austin Chronicle’s Restaurant Reader’s Poll. They’re kind of a big deal in town, and we think they’re going to raise big bucks for Japan!

We’ll be previewing even more recipes and photos from all five bake sale locations tomorrow and Friday. In the meantime, we’re preparing for lots of social networking on Saturday and afterwards. Here’s a rundown of links to our online communities:

  • Flickr: We’ll be asking people to post photos of their baked goods and photos from the bake sale here!
